What is sheet 1.4841?
This material is an austenitic heat-resistant stainless steel with good resistance to corrosion at high temperatures. It is a chromium-nickel steel, also known under the name Permodur 4841.
Due to its heat resistance, it is used above all in high-temperature environments. Regarding corrosion resistance, it should be noted that sheet 1.4841 is only slightly resistant to oxidising and reducing sulphurous gases. Its corrosion resistance to carburising gases up to 900 degrees Celsius and to nitrogen-containing, oxygen-poor gases is to be rated as medium.
Where is sheet 1.4841 used?
As heat resistance is the defining characteristic of this stainless steel, it is often used in furnace construction. The sheet is also in demand for apparatus engineering in extreme-temperature service and in the automotive industry.
Because stainless steel can be processed well and, above all, precisely, the chemical industry, the petroleum industry and the cement and chain industries are further fields of application.
How can heat-resistant sheet 1.4841 be processed?
Here, the material properties must be considered separately for the different processing methods:
The formation of carbides increases wear on the cutting tools used in machining. This can be reduced by using high-quality tools and providing sufficient cooling during processing. According to the 1.4841 data sheet, low cutting speeds and shallow cutting depths should be observed when machining.
In principle, heat-resistant sheet 1.4841 can be welded with all common processes without preheating. It should be borne in mind, however, that this stainless grade is susceptible to so-called hot cracking. The risk of such cracks can be reduced by limiting the maximum welding temperature. No heat treatment is required after welding.
The temperature range for forging stainless steel 1.4841 is between 1,175 and 1,000 degrees Celsius. Rapid cooling is required after forging - either in water or in air.

You will probably already suspect that such a specialised material is not available on every corner. You can certainly save yourself the trip to the DIY store.
