Most people are not even aware that there are different types of stainless steel. They use them - depending on the specification an object is made from - as if it were always the same material.

What exactly is stainless steel 1.4571?

It is an austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum steel stabilised with titanium. One of its most important properties in use is that it is corrosion-resistant. It is used above all where strength is required even at high temperatures.

Its good corrosion resistance in almost all natural waters makes it ideal wherever moisture and liquids are involved - provided the concentration of salt, chloride and hydrochloric acid is not too high. This applies both to private use and to industrial applications where stainless steel 1.4571 is selected precisely for these material properties.

Particularly suitable for high temperatures

Alloying with titanium raises the maximum service temperature of stainless steel 1.4571. It can be used at temperatures of up to 400 degrees Celsius and remains heat-resistant, meaning that a component made from this stainless steel does not deform - even under sustained high temperature.

In return, however, you have to accept that its cold-working characteristics deteriorate: the mechanical properties for cold formability, cold heading behaviour and notched impact toughness are reduced by the titanium stabilisation.

This is why stainless steel 1.4571 is used above all where its temperature resistance is required.

Where is stainless steel 1.4571 typically used?

This steel is frequently used in plant engineering as well as in shipbuilding. The construction industry and the automotive sector also use stainless steel 1.4571 in many ways. Due to its purity, it is also used in production facilities in the pharmaceutical and medical sectors.

It plays an essential role in the food industry, where stainless steel 1.4571 is used above all for the storage and transport of foodstuffs such as milk.

How can stainless steel 1.4571 be processed?

Welding stainless steel 1.4571

It can be welded with all common processes. Filler metal can be dispensed with, and heat treatment is not required when welding stainless steel 1.4571. Care should, however, be taken that interpass temperatures do not exceed 200 degrees Celsius.

Forging stainless steel 1.4571

Provided it is preheated to 1,150-1,180 degrees Celsius, this stainless steel can be forged in the temperature range between 1,180 and 950 degrees Celsius. Subsequent cooling is always carried out with water.

Machining stainless steel 1.4571

If you want to machine stainless steel 1.4571, bear in mind that the addition of titanium increases tool wear.

Stainless steel 1.4571 V2A / V4A: what is the difference?

In everyday life you mostly encounter stainless steel in the V2A version. It is corrosion-resistant and thus meets the requirements of many applications - whether as sheet or as a screw. What can harm stainless steel is chloride-containing substances.

By adding around 2% molybdenum, you obtain a V4A stainless steel. This is considerably more resistant to corrosion in chloride-containing media, which broadens the range of applications. In shipbuilding in particular, but also in the food industry, the V4A version is therefore predominantly used.
