Today we turn to a group of metals grouped together under the term V2A sheet. We want to explain what these sheets are all about and how they are composed. Finally, we will present the material properties of V2A stainless steel.
Of course, this will not be a dry lecture like at school. We want to help you make the right choice when selecting sheets for your project - and naturally, we can also advise you individually. You will find out how at the end of our article on V2A sheet.
What is V2A sheet?
The term V2A covers various alloys with very similar properties. V2A sheet was discovered in 1912, during the search for a metal with very high corrosion resistance combined with good mechanical properties.
The name V2A derives from the terms Versuchsschmelze (trial melt, V) and austenite (A). It is the abbreviation for "trial melt 2, austenite" and is today regarded as a synonym for rustproof stainless steel. Many products are labelled V2A to emphasise their rust resistance.
Chemical composition
All V2A plates are alloys with a high proportion of chromium and nickel - these are the essential constituents. Chromium is present in a concentration of 18 to 20%, while nickel accounts for between 8 and 11%.
The other constituents are up to 2% manganese, up to 1% silicon and up to 0.1% nitrogen. In addition, V2A stainless sheet alloys contain up to 0.045% phosphorus, up to 0.03% sulphur and up to 0.07% carbon.
Mechanical properties
In general, V2A sheets can be processed very well. They are resistant up to a temperature of 600 degrees Celsius. The various alloys such as 1.4301 or 1.4307 can be welded well with all common processes; depending on which alloy you choose, a filler metal is required.
A V2A plate can be formed very well. This metal group, however, is not well suited to machining. Its tensile strength is also to be classified as low compared with other metals. Thermal conductivity is low, while thermal expansion must be rated as high.
Fields of application
Thanks to its high-quality appearance, with both a ground and a mirror-polished surface, V2A sheet is used in many sectors. Beyond the visual appeal, the material properties are of course also advantageous.
Plants and vessels made of V2A stainless sheet are indispensable in the food industry, the chemical industry and the construction industry. We also constantly encounter products made of V2A sheet in everyday life: almost whenever products are classified as rustproof, they are alloys from this group. Screws and tools made of V2A steel are the most common representatives.
Which V2A dimensions do we offer?
We have aligned our range with our customers' demand. Our permanent stock includes V2A sheet in the common thicknesses. Should we not have the thickness you need in stock, we can of course procure it at short notice.
Our customers order particularly often:
- V2A sheet 1 mm
- V2A sheet 3 mm
- V2A sheet 5 mm
- V2A sheet 10 mm
We can offer you all these sheets in various sizes. Even large-format V2A stainless sheets are no problem for our machines.
Difference between V2A and V4A stainless steel
When talking about V2A sheet, you almost inevitably have to talk about V4A sheets as well. This is a group of stainless grades similar to V2A sheets, with a small share of molybdenum as an additional constituent.
This makes the decisive difference between V2A and V4A: the addition of molybdenum makes V4A even more corrosion-resistant, so that even chloride-containing substances and seawater cannot harm the metal. V4A is therefore also the first choice for building and equipping swimming pools.
Order made-to-measure V2A stainless steel from ESC Burg
Now that we have explained briefly and concisely how V2A sheet is composed and which properties distinguish it, you may already have decided on an alloy. In that case, we will not keep you in suspense any longer and will reveal the most convenient way to order a made-to-measure V2A sheet.
You will not be able to buy one at the DIY store, and your local metal fabricator will probably not be falling over themselves for your order. We will - because we have built our company to accept and process large and small orders efficiently. If you are interested in our products, call our sales team without obligation and get free advice.
Advice first, order second
We do not sell off-the-shelf products; all our products are made to customer order. Because the various stainless steel alloys differ in their properties and of course also in price, personal advice is essential for us. With a few questions, we find out whether V2A is the right choice for you and which alloy is optimally suited to your project.
You will then also be quoted a price immediately, because we are used to calculating customer orders and only need a brief moment to do so. If you then decide to order, your job goes straight into production. This is usually completed within 48 hours, so that we can ship your individual sheets to you after 2 days.
In addition to cutting, we can also offer you forming and surface treatment as additional stainless steel services. Here too, we have professional machines and well-trained staff - who will be happy to prepare a non-binding quotation for you.
Put us to the test
We can assure you that we work to millimetre precision and that your sheets will arrive securely packaged within a few days. Because we calculate every sheet individually, our prices are absolutely transparent. We also determine shipping costs based on the size and weight of your consignment.
Feel free to compare our offer with the time and effort you would have to invest to obtain and process a V2A sheet yourself. We are confident you will decide in our favour and look forward to your order - whether you need just a single replacement sheet or want to order several sheets from us.
