Grade 1.4835: heat-resistant austenitic steel for the highest temperatures

All about heat-resistant stainless steel 1.4835 (X9CrNiSiNCe21-11-2, known as 253 MA): properties, temperature limits, comparison with 1.4828 and 1.4841, typical applications and supply via ESC Burg.

Grade 1.4835 (designation X9CrNiSiNCe21-11-2, listed internationally as UNS S30815 and known under the trade name 253 MA) is a heat-resistant austenitic stainless steel for components permanently exposed to very high temperatures. It combines high scaling resistance with above-average high-temperature strength for this material group - making it an economical alternative to higher-alloyed grades such as 1.4841.

Composition and working principle

1.4835 is standardised in EN 10095 (heat-resisting steels). As guide values, the alloy contains around 21% chromium and 11% nickel, plus an increased silicon content, deliberately alloyed nitrogen and a small addition of cerium (rare earths). This concept has two effects: silicon and cerium improve the adhesion and density of the protective oxide layer - even under temperature cycling - while nitrogen stabilises the austenitic structure and increases creep strength. The grade thus achieves properties with a comparatively moderate nickel content that would otherwise require much higher-alloyed materials.

Properties at a glance

  • Service temperature: scaling-resistant in air up to about 1,150 °C; the exact limit depends on atmosphere and temperature cycling.
  • High-temperature strength: high creep and stress-rupture strength in the upper temperature range - the main advantage over classic heat-resistant grades.
  • Cyclic loading: the cerium-containing oxide layer adheres well under changing temperatures and spalls less.
  • Note on embrittlement: like all high-chromium austenites, 1.4835 can lose toughness through precipitation during long exposure at roughly 600 to 850 °C. For components operating permanently in this intermediate range, the material choice should be reviewed case by case - talk to us.

Comparison with 1.4828 and 1.4841

1.4828 is the proven all-rounder up to about 1,000 °C; 1.4841 the classic choice above that. 1.4835 positions itself as a modern high-performance grade: it reaches the temperature level of 1.4841 while offering higher hot strength, allowing thinner and lighter designs. Where components carry mechanical loads at the highest temperatures - such as supporting structures in furnace construction - it plays to its strengths.

Typical applications

Furnace construction and heat-treatment equipment (rollers, muffles, charging racks, radiant tubes), waste incineration and fluidised-bed plants, combustion chambers, recuperators, and hot-gas components in the cement, glass and process industries.

Processing

1.4835 can be welded and formed using standard methods; due to its nitrogen and silicon content, matched filler metals and moderate heat input are recommended. Laser and plasma cutting are readily possible.

Frequently asked questions about 1.4835

Up to what temperature can 1.4835 be used?

In air, the grade is scaling-resistant up to about 1,150 °C. In carburising, sulphur-containing or steam-rich atmospheres the limit is lower - operating conditions should therefore always be assessed case by case.

How does 1.4835 differ from 1.4841?

Both cover the uppermost temperature range. Thanks to nitrogen and cerium, 1.4835 offers higher creep strength and a particularly adherent oxide layer under temperature cycling - with a lower nickel content. 1.4841 remains a proven choice where existing designs and approvals are based on it.
