Today we would like to introduce you to another material suited to special challenges: stainless steel 1.4410. Also known under the designations UNS S32750 and X2CrNiMoN25-7-4, 1.4410 is a super duplex steel with outstanding corrosion resistance as well as a high yield strength and high overall strength.
1.4410 is used above all where common duplex steels such as 1.4462 reach their limits. With this article we want to give you all the essentials about the material so that you can decide whether it is suitable for your project. Of course, you will also learn how to order this special metal from us.
The composition of UNS S32750
This austenitic-ferritic steel is an alloy of chromium, nickel and molybdenum. With a share of 24.0 to 26.0%, chromium is the most important constituent, followed by nickel (6-8%) and molybdenum with 3.0 to 4.5% of the alloy.
The other constituents are weighted much lower: a maximum of 2% manganese, silicon (below 1%) and nitrogen with a share of 0.24 to 0.35%. Phosphorus accounts for at most 0.035%, carbon for 0.03% and sulphur for 0.015%.
What distinguishes 1.4410
The properties that make material 1.4410 so special arise from this specific composition. We have summarised the most important properties in this table for you:
| Corrosion resistance | Excellent |
| Mechanical properties | Excellent |
| Weldability | Good |
Very good corrosion resistance and good chemical resistance open up many fields of application with challenging conditions. The thermal conductivity of 1.4410 also sets the material apart positively from other stainless grades. 1.4410 can be used at temperatures of up to 250 degrees Celsius. Its good machinability is an important criterion for mechanical processing.
Heat treatment and thermal conductivity of 1.4410
If you want to heat-treat UNS S32750, you should observe the following guide values. For solution annealing, the temperature range between 1,040 and 1,120 degrees Celsius must be reached; water and air are suitable for cooling.
Hot forming is possible at temperatures between 1,000 and 1,200 degrees Celsius. The thermal conductivity of 1.4410 reaches a value of 15 W/m K.
Application examples for material 1.4410
As even permanent contact with seawater poses no problem for UNS S32750, it is popular in shipping and especially in offshore installations for oil and gas production as well as in the construction of offshore wind turbines.
The petrochemical and chemical industries also frequently rely on plants and vessels made of 1.4410, because they are extremely robust and can be cleaned quickly and thoroughly. For mechanical and plant engineering, its corrosion resistance is a decisive advantage over other materials.
How material 1.4410 can be processed
For stainless steel sheets, welding is - apart from brazing - the most important joining method. While some alloys can be processed well with all common welding methods, the weldability of 1.4410 varies considerably between processes but is still to be rated as good overall.
Welding work on 1.4410 should preferably be carried out with the following processes, all of which are well suited:
- TIG welding
- Arc welding
- MAG with solid wire
- Laser beam welding
Submerged arc welding and gas fusion welding are only suitable to a limited extent. This should be considered when selecting the welding process in order to achieve the best possible result.
A strong material for challenging tasks
As the material has excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion and is also resistant to intergranular corrosion both before and after welding, it is a very popular material. Unfortunately, this does not mean you can buy 1.4410 on the spur of the moment.
Even at well-stocked builders' merchants, it is difficult to obtain sheets of stainless steel 1.4410. And even if you do, you then have to bring them to the required dimensions yourself with a precise cut.
Because most people lack the routine for working with sheet metal and can quickly injure themselves on the sharp edges, it is advisable to leave the cutting to a professional. Many metalworking companies can offer this service, even though their offer is not primarily aimed at small customers.
We offer 1.4410 to every customer
This is what sets us apart from many other suppliers. We make no distinction between a private customer who needs a few sheets and a business customer who wants to order several hundred parts from us. We have designed our production processes to handle both smaller and large orders quickly and efficiently.
It is important to us to apply our expertise and experience for all customers. We calculate individual prices, because each of our products is made to customer order - we hold no stock of finished sheets. Our offer is not regionally limited and is aimed at customers throughout Germany.
Various services around sheet metal
The centre of our production is, of course, cutting. We purchase large quantities of sheet in various grades and thicknesses. Using professional machines, we bring them to the dimensions you need - every cut is accurate to the millimetre.
We are also happy to offer you further services at our plant. These include forming: we produce various profiles and angles to your specifications, using the right machines to guarantee a perfect result.
Last but not least, we have created our surface treatment department. With various grinding processes, pickling or foil protection, we can finish sheets exactly as you need them for your purpose.
Get advice without obligation
If you are interested in our services for sheets of stainless steel 1.4410, simply call our sales team. This is of course completely non-binding and free of charge. It is important to us to determine which alloy and which material thickness are optimal for you - so you can use our staff's experience to your advantage.
After asking you a few questions, we can immediately calculate and quote the price for the sheet or sheets to your specifications. With us, you do not have to wait days for a quotation. And should you then decide to order, your job goes straight into production.
We dispatch almost all orders within 48 hours, which shows that we have optimally geared our production to individual manufacturing. You only have to wait a few days until you hold a sheet made to your specifications in your hands. Apart from being the most convenient way to obtain 1.4410 sheets, it is probably also the fastest. We look forward to your call.
